Concrete Slab And Geotechnical Engineering Services

RACKsteel provides concrete slab review, geotechnical evaluations, and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scanning services for industrial pallet racking installations. Our engineers evaluate floor load capacities, anchor embedment limits, and soil classifications for structural compliance and safe warehouse operations.

Verify your facility slab and soil capacities with RACKsteel.

Building Concrete Slab Data

It is not sufficient to assume a building slab can support a proposed racking system without a professional engineer review. The engineer needs to prepare concrete drawings while analyzing the rack system. If concrete drawings are unavailable, these records can often be requested from the local City Hall or municipal building department. If you are unable to obtain those documents, RACKsteel can assist by coordinating 3rd-party core sampling or non-destructive GPR scanning in lieu of structural drawings.

Importance of Slab Review & GPR Scanning Services

  • Point Load Verification: Verifies the slab will not crack or punch through under high-density loads imposed by the racking system.
  • Anchor Bolt Embedment: Verifies that anchor bolts reach required depths without severing post-tension cables or rebar.
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Scanning: Non-destructive testing method used to detect slab thickness, rebar depth, rebar spacing, conduit locations, and subsurface voids before drilling or coring.
  • Core Drilling & Slab Testing: Physical sampling used to test concrete compressive strength (PSI/MPa) when original structural blueprints do not exist.

Site Geotechnical Data

The engineer requires geotechnical data while analyzing the rack system. A geotechnical report stating the soil Site Class (ranging from Site Class A for hard rock to Site Class F for poor soils) is required to determine the precise seismic forces applied to the rack structure. Consider requesting the geotechnical report from your local City Hall, building strata, or landlord if original documents are missing. If you are unable to obtain a geotechnical report, RACKsteel has partners who can provide a geotechnical assessment for your project.

Importance of Geotechnical Data

  • Seismic Load Calculations: Soil type directly alters how earthquake motion magnifies ground acceleration into the racking frame.
  • Code Compliance: Building codes strictly mandate a defined Site Class to calculate base shear and overturning resistance.
  • Prevention of Settlement: Confirms subgrade stability to prevent rack tilting, unlevel beams, or foundation sinking.

Customer-Provided Documentation Required for Racking Engineering

To engineer pallet racking and issue stamped drawings, clients must provide the following building documentation:

ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS

Overall building floor plans, exit locations, interior walls, and column grid lines.

STRUCTURAL CONCRETE & FOUNDATION DRAWINGS

Slab thickness, concrete PSI/MPa rating, rebar mesh layout, and footings.

SITE GEOTECHNICAL REPORT

Document specifying the soil classification and Site Class parameter.

FIRE SUPPRESSION & SPRINKLER PLANS

Main riser locations, pipe heights, and sprinkler head layouts to verify rack clearance.

BUILDING MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL DRAWINGS

Overhead HVAC ducting, lighting heights, unit heaters, and floor conduits.
